      Okay Ct, stumped me.

My thinking is this. Was watching a movie with generic but acceptible production values and acting and was wondering - why am I bored out of my mind?

And then I realized. Because Everything was "and then... " and nothing was "so then..." The movie was a string of events that happened as opposed to a series of cause / effects. Eventhough one could argue all the subsequent scenes did result from the former - the inherent drama was not linked.

Suddenly we are at an event because it just happened to be going on and - oh - good opportunity for a little jet ski action scene. You can almost feel the executive desired list of plot events. Now, I'm sure Raider's of the Los Ark had a list of required scenes - but the writer was able to make it feel like all these things had to happen - nothing was arbitrary. Everything had to happen because of what had just happened.

Mark, Do I understand you correctly? You would prefer to see a logical step progression in every story. I can understand the required need for a thread throughtout the story to hold it together, but life goes on around us every moment and *sometimes* motivates us to take differant directions. (so then)(Why didn't he,she, they go that way?) I think I agree with you. Perhaps you are the vanguard for change to movies with underlying emotions and questions. I'm rambling so I'm going to stop now. I need to work a little today.

Well, ironically, I actually like experimental films. And these films often are quite non-linear. So I want to make sure that I point out that I'm not saying "all films must be like THIS."

Mostly what I'm saying is that the majority of films have linear plots... and for these films... I think it might be wise for a writer to switch his thinking from...

They are researching spells in the ancient spell book...
and then they go into the forrest and find the dragon...
and then they slay the mighty dragon...
          and then the townspeople rejoice
and then the mighty hydra emerges
          and then everyone runs away
and then they fight the hydra...

          ETC.

This is how many movies are feeling to me lately. What I feel is missing from the movies is the WE MUST NOW do this. A dramatic impertive.

Without the impertive consequence, it is like listening to a four year old tell a story. "We went to the zoo and then my mommy said there were some zebras and then we saw zebras and then she talked to the man in the hat and then the man in the hat bought some ice cream and then the monkey ate and it and bunnies are cute and why don't you come to the zoo, daddy?" (he he he)

Anyway, I realize you can throw a "so then" in - but that's not really my point... I'm just using that to delineate the concept of consequence into action.... but I can't just go back and make the same story but with "so's" because every event will change. Sure it's still a movie about some magic kids who slay a dragon, but the structure would inherently be something totally totally different.

As a sidebar comment, I have revisited many movies from my youth and have been disappointed in them. But not the Wallace Berry films as an example of what is still good, "what keeps our attention' It sounds to me like you've simply outgrown this genre.
