Take the strange road

About two years ago I sat down to write a feature. It instantly created writers block. As much as the story was burning to be put in print I couldn't get going. I tried the Syd Field exercises to no avail. I studiously researched my characters, nothing. Finally I decided to write a short that had nothing to do with my story just to get in motion. I was having fun with it and before I knew it this little short became something I wanted to make. It had character archetypes that I cared about, scene's that wanted to on screen. It had a voice, mine. Furthermore, my other ideas started coming together as well. Not that this method is for everyone but I thought I would put it out here for the taking.

I always find that it helps to be writing two things at a time. I think it's just my way of doing what many writers suggest you must do - just write. Write anything on the page, just ramble on about the thoughts that you have even if they don't come out in screenplay format.

Yeah it sucks, the lack of control we have over are own minds! The human mind is super weak... and so sadly it's true as a writer, like Mark said we have to find a way to get thoughts out even if it's not exactly what or how we wanted to get something out of are head. It's sad, but it helps and it works... I have hundreds of pages of random thoughts and Ideas stuffed away in drawers. God, I want to control my own mind, but how? I also totally agree that writing a short film helps... sad and also wonderful that's also what I had to do to. I think it's just because it makes your mind more cocky even though it's just a fucking short. By the way mark that info spot you shot for MTV was awesome!

More praise for your public service announcement, Talking about writing a short, I've seen a thousand short films and "Least Likely" is 30 seconds long and... I honestly think is better than all of them. Mark, I want you to be my mentor.
